Real
Life Stuff
Like Agnes, my son was assigned to construct a home made costume for a social studies report in elementary school. Students had to research a famous Native American and give a speech dressed as that person. My son chose Sitting Bull. Some kids beat up and crumpled
paper bags to look like leather. Of course, the costumes weren't
authentic--but the kids were limited to materials they had on hand. It was
a fun project, yet I was surprised by how attached many students became to
the person they represented. These were people from the past who
demonstrated character and courage in the face of an extraordinarily mean,
rapidly-changing world. As the students absorbed their stories, they also
took those struggles seriously, even personally -- and it showed when they
spoke. |
