About Writing

I've always written things: songs, plays, jokes, skits, stories, poems. I think I was born a "maker-upper." The first report I ever wrote was in third grade about cotton. I made it up completely, including the statistics.  I didn't even know it was wrong to do that.  "One million people in America use cotton every day!" I said.  It sounded good enough to be real, and that was fine with me.

Now I write books.  With books, it's okay to take bits from real life and mix them up with made-up stuff.  For instance, I really did break my arm and get glasses in my sixth grade year, just like Agnes.  And I got the name Neidermeyer from a girl I used to go to school with (although she was  nothing like Neidermeyer in the book).  Also like Agnes, I am crummy at throwing snowballs and wore an Ace of Hearts as a Halloween costume.  But most of the rest I invented. Inventing is the fun part of writing.
